Meditation according to our Founder, Nithya Gopalan
Meditation is often misunderstood as an activity that needs to be practiced only for a fixed amount of time—10 minutes, 20 minutes, or one hour a day. While setting aside dedicated time for meditation practice is important, true meditation goes far beyond the practice time.
At its core, meditation means being centered. It is the practice of maintaining a state of balance and neutrality—being centered in body and speech. The mind can "only" be controlled by centering and disciplining the body. This centered state is not limited to a meditation session alone; it is something we can consciously maintain throughout the day.
Practice Time vs. Meditative Living
When we sit for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, half an hour, or even one hour to meditate, that time is essentially practice time. It helps us become familiar with the state of centeredness. However, meditation itself is not confined to these minutes.
Meditation can be practiced 24/7 by continuously observing and correcting our inner state whenever we feel uncentered. Whenever we notice that we have moved away from balance—emotionally, mentally, or physically—we can gently bring ourselves back to the center.
Living in a Centered State
Even during our normal daily activities, we can regularly check:
Is my body relaxed and balanced?
Is my speech aligned and conscious?
By paying attention to these aspects, we can maintain a centered, meditative state at all times.
